What is CART?
CART (Communication Access Realtime Translation)
is the instantaneous translation of the spoken word into English text using a stenotype machine, notebook computer and realtime software and displaying the text on
a laptop computer, monitor or screen. Our personal CART service is often provided in classroom settings
for a deaf or hard-of-hearing student or for use by one to two people in a
meeting, and group CART services display the text on a large monitor or
screen. The text displayed includes identification of the speaker, when known, the dialogue and, where possible, a description of
sounds.
CART has historically been thought of as a service primarily for deaf and
hard-of-hearing individuals but has been found to be the service of choice for anyone
physically unable to take notes or unable to concentrate on classroom work and
take notes at the same time, such as individuals with CAPD (Central Auditory
Processing Disorder).
Levels of Service
Personal Cart
Serving one client with a laptop
computer. Personal CART service is requested by many
students who customarily engage the services of an ASL
interpreter but prefer the CART service because of the legacy
created in the form of a text file. Many colleges allow
the student to receive the notes in a text file format to be
used as a study guide or assist with notetaking and review of
the lecture. This service is an obvious choice for
late-deafened, hard-of-hearing and other individuals with little
or no knowledge of American Sign Language. Additionally,
individuals with central auditory processing or neurological
disorders benefit greatly by receiving CART for the purpose of
verbatim notetaking, the text file of which may be reviewed
later as reinforcement to the class session or lecture.
Small
CART
Serving one to five clients with laptops
or monitors
Group
CART
Serving a large group with
projected text. The group CART
level of service requires a more experienced stenocaptioner and the use of an LCD
projector or other laptop projection devices.
Every level of service and display requires different technical devices and skill, each with its unique
fee. So that we may tailor our services to meet your needs, please
contact us by e-mail or phone to discuss our fee structure.
Key Benefits
of Providing CART
Provide communication access to deaf and hard-of-hearing
individuals to be in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities
Act (1990).
Ease the burden and strain of hearing for individuals who are
hard of hearing or wear assistive listening devices. Often the
acoustics of a room and background noise make it difficult, if not
impossible, to hear effectively.
